What happens when the heater sits unused?

When you first turn your heater back on after a summer of running the air conditioning, there is sure to be some accumulated dust on the heating systems. Don’t be surprised when you start your heating system up for the first time there's a dusty/musty smell. That is the dust bunnies being burned by the flames or heating elements, depending on which type of system you have. Will your smoke detectors go off? It’s unlikely. The dust usually burns up rather quickly just leaving the smell behind. After a few hours of running, the smell should be gone.  

Some things to check before using the system for the first time (after keeping it off all summer):

 1) First, make sure combustibles are away from the furnace if you have a natural gas furnace. This includes keeping boxes and flammable items cleared around the unit. For those who have an all electric system or heat pump, then those precautions aren’t as relevant since there is no combustion. 

2) Second, always put a new filter in at the start of the season before turning system on so you get good airflow and filter the particulates 

3) Third, if you have had some roofing done on your home recently, check to make sure the flue/exhaust pipe was not damaged or moved. It’s very common for this to happen after a roofing job.
