How Does the 2020 Freon Ban Affect Homeowners in Texas?

As of January 1st, 2020, Freon will no longer be imported or manufactured in the US or to the US. The EPA in 2015 determined that this is a ‘gas’ that contributes to ozone depletion. What does this Freon ban mean for you?

Now that 2020 has come, Freon is so restricted that it will be hard to come by. Thus, it will either be highly difficult to find and/or cost a lot of money to have your system filled.

Should I Get a FREE Evalution for a New System?

Texas Discount Air recommends you have a free evaluation if your system is experiencing any of the following:

  1. A unit that is freezing up
  2. A low pressure shut down
  3. The compressor fails to turn on
  4. The breaker is tripping
  5. No cold air is coming from your system

These "symptoms" reveal a possible leak. They may mean that the system needs to be filled with Freon. If any of these things are happening, we recommend that you have your system evaluated to see whether replacing your AC system is the right option.

If I Have a Freon Leak, Do I Need to Buy a New System?

Homeowners will have to evaluate whether to pay $500 and up in repairs for a mechanical repair that will not solve the Freon ban problem. On aging systems the best option is often to replace because of this Freon ban. Repairs can temporarily keep you system working, but you will be putting money into an AC unit that will likely keep breaking or leaking.

This may be counter productive for the customer because they will still have to replace. Money that could have gone toward a new system will be spent on very expensive Freon.

What If I Can't Afford a New AC System?

For homeowners in Keller, Southlake, Watauga, North Richland Hills and North Fort Worth who need to replace their Air Conditioning system, we offer financing that divides the cost of an AC system into monthly payments.

Many homeowners whose systems were installed before 2015 in the North Fort Worth area have Air Conditioning systems that run using the banned Freon (R-22).
